Paikka jonka vain kiersimme, mutta jossa emme käyneet: Vanha Jerusalem

19.5. 2017 Paikka, jossa emme käyneet tällä Israelin matkalla : Vanhan Jerusalemin muurien sisäpuolinen alue.  Sen alue on 0,9 neliökilometriä ja se on täynnä arkeologisia kohteita ja museoita. -  puhumattakaan kaupoista, kojuista, turisteille tarkoitetuista muistoesineistä, kahviloista,  ym.

• Jerusalemin vanhakaupunki (hepr. ‏העיר העתיקה‎) on 0,9 neliökilometrin kokoinen muurilla erotettu kaupunginosa Jerusalemin itäosassa, joka 1860-luvulle asti oli koko Jerusalemin kaupunki. Vanhassakaupungissa on useita uskonnollisesti merkittäviä kohteita. Temppelivuori ja Itkumuuri ovat pyhiä juutalaisille, Pyhän haudan kirkko kristityille, Kalliomoskeija ja Al-Aqsa muslimeille.

Vanhankaupunki jaetaan armenialaisten kortteliin, kristittyjen kortteliin, juutalaisten kortteliin ja muslimikortteliin. Nykyinen jako muodostui 1800-luvulla. Ottomaanit rakensivat vanhan kaupungin tukevat puolustusmuurit ja kaupungin portit 1500-luvun lopulla. Nykyisin eniten asukkaita on muslimien ja kristittyjen kortteleissa. Vuonna 2007 kokonaisasukasmäärä oli 36 965; uskonnollisten ryhmien mukaan jaoteltuna vuonna 2006 vanhassakaupungissa oli 27 500 muslimia, 5 681 kristittyä, 790 armenialaista ja 3 089 juutalaista.

Vuoden 1948 Israelin itsenäisyyssodan jälkeen Jordania otti vanhankaupungin haltuunsa ja juutalaiset asukkaat häädettiin. Kuuden päivän sodan aikana vuonna 1967 käytiin lähitaisteluita Temppelivuoren luona, ja Israel sai haltuunsa vanhankaupungin muun Itä-Jerusalemin ohessa, liitti ne Israelin alueisiin ja yhdisti uudelleen kaupungin läntiseen osaan. Israel hallitsee nykyisin vanhankaupungin aluetta, jonka se katsoo osaksi pääkaupunkiaan.

Vanha kaupunki liitettiin Unescon maailmanperintöluetteloon vuonna 1981.

Jerusalem is an old holy city that has been in contention amongst all the Abrahamic religions that include; Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. All the three religions have a claim to the city as all of them has their roots in it. Below are a few facts about the city.

6. If you are looking to sample the wine of the Ancient Hebrews, you will not be disappointed. There are a whopping 26 wineries in Jerusalem alone.

7. The Mount of Olives is the preferred burial site for a majority of Jews. The mountain boasts 150,000 graves that date as far back as 15th century.

8. The three Jewish holidays of Sukkot, Pesach, and Shavuot are connected with the old city. Without the old city, they will not be celebrated.

9. King David was buried on Mount Zion in Old Jerusalem city.

10. The First Temple in Old City was built by 150,000 Jewish workers and overseen by 3,300 men.

If you have never been to Jerusalem, then it is about time you went there. You will never get to understand where 3 of the most popular world religions originated. The city is laden with history. Not even Rome or Medina in Saudi Arabia can touch Jerusalem in terms of Religious history. If you are looking to sample what the Jewish culture has to offer, then Jerusalem is your best bet. Apart from being a religious holy city, Jerusalem is a tourist friendly city that welcomes millions of tourists from around the globe every year.
