PM: Abbas hurts peace prospects with UN settlement resolution | ![]()
Israel
has warned that a new initiative by the Palestinians to pass a UN
Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity only
pushes peace prospects further away.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said in a statement that Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas is taking a step to push negotiations further away. The only way to advance peace is by direct negotiations and Abbas is avoiding this, Netanyahu said. The prime minister went on to say that the Palestinians educate their children on a daily basis that the settlements are Tel Aviv, Haifa and Acre. Israel's ambassador at the UN, Danny Danon accused the Palestinians of trying to deceive the international community by pushing initiatives that do not help either side. The Palestinian mission at the UN has confirmed that it has begun distributing a draft resolution among representatives of the Security Council members states, condemning Israeli settlements in the West Bank. No further details of the resolution were given, but it is believed to have similar wording to a previous resolution that was defeated by a US veto five years ago. That resolution declared Israeli settlements illegal and called for an immediate end to settlement expansion.
